This high valley, southwest of Molas Pass (between Durango and Silverton, CO) drains the headwaters of Cascade Creek that flows down into the Animas River and eventually the Colorado River.  The deep red and orange volcanic formations have been a primary source of silver and gold.  On the way from Denver to Durango, the Colorado Trail leads through this high valley where elk are abundant.
